Sailing With Babies: Can You Still Enjoy Your Boat?
Becoming a parent changes many things, but it doesn’t necessarily mean giving up sailing. In fact, owning a sailboat offers wonderful opportunities to spend quality time together as a family, discover new places and introduce children to the sea from an early age.
Of course, sailing with babies and toddlers requires additional planning. Safety, comfort, supervision and adapting the boat to the needs of its youngest crew members become important considerations.
Fortunately, many useful improvements don’t require expensive marine equipment. Sometimes, ordinary household products and simple DIY solutions can make life aboard much easier.
Essential Equipment and DIY Ideas for Sailing With Kids
Here are some of the products and practical ideas featured in our video. These are the kinds of affordable solutions we love exploring at The Low Cost Sailor!
1. Baby and Child Life Jackets: Safety Comes First
When taking babies or children aboard, choosing an appropriate baby life jacket or children’s life jacket is essential. A child’s life jacket must be suitable for their weight and size, properly fitted and appropriate for the intended boating conditions.
For very young children, pay particular attention to head support, flotation characteristics, crotch straps and the manufacturer’s minimum weight recommendations.

Safety tip: Never assume that a life jacket makes a child safe without constant adult supervision. Check the manufacturer’s instructions and applicable boating safety regulations.
2. Netting and Elastic Cords: Organize Your Sailboat
Space is always limited on a sailboat, and loose equipment can become a problem when the boat starts moving. That’s why storage nets and elastic cords are incredibly useful accessories.
We use netting to organize equipment, keep objects from moving around and experiment with creating enclosed play spaces. For some applications, I use two layers of netting.

These inexpensive materials are also useful for many other DIY sailboat storage projects, even if you don’t have children aboard.
Important: Improvised netting is not a certified child safety barrier. Any play area must be carefully assessed for entrapment, falls and other hazards, and children must remain supervised.
3. Mini WiFi Camera: Keep an Eye on Different Areas of Your Boat
A small WiFi monitoring camera can be a surprisingly useful accessory on a sailboat. It allows you to check different areas of the boat remotely from a compatible device.
These compact cameras are affordable, easy to position and useful for monitoring a cabin or another part of the boat while you’re elsewhere aboard.

Remember that a camera is only an additional monitoring aid and never a substitute for direct adult supervision of babies or young children.
4. Inflatable Baby Pool: A Little Swimming Pool in the Cockpit!
One of our more unusual ideas is using a small inflatable baby pool in the sailboat’s cockpit.
It’s an inexpensive accessory that can provide a little entertainment during suitable, calm conditions. As with many of our inventions, the idea is to adapt an ordinary product to life aboard.

Water safety: Babies and toddlers can drown in very shallow water. Never leave a child unattended in or near a pool, even for a moment. Use only in appropriate stationary conditions and consider the effects of water weight and movement aboard.
5. IKEA ANTILOP: An Affordable High Chair for Boat Life
Not everything useful aboard needs to come from a marine equipment store!
The IKEA ANTILOP high chair is a great example of a simple, affordable household product that can inspire practical solutions for family boat life.
We discuss its versatility and how ordinary products can sometimes be adapted to the particular challenges of living aboard a sailboat.

Use a high chair only in conditions and locations consistent with its manufacturer’s safety instructions. It should not be treated as a marine restraint system or used unsecured on a moving boat.
How to Make a Sailboat More Family-Friendly on a Budget
You don’t necessarily need a bigger boat or expensive modifications to enjoy sailing as a family. A few practical principles can make a big difference:
- Prioritize safety: Choose properly fitted life jackets and plan how to supervise children throughout the trip.
- Secure loose equipment: Use appropriate storage solutions to prevent objects from moving around.
- Adapt your sailing plans: Consider weather conditions, trip duration and the needs of your youngest crew members.
- Make life aboard comfortable: Think about feeding, sleeping, shade and entertainment.
- Get creative: Look for affordable products and simple DIY boat hacks instead of assuming every solution must be expensive marine equipment.
Above all, remember that family sailing is about adapting the adventure to your family, not forcing your family to adapt to the adventure.
Can You Drink Alcohol on a Recreational Boat?
Before babies became part of the crew, our sailboat was also a wonderful place for social gatherings, meals and drinks with friends.
But this raises an interesting question: Is drinking alcohol on a boat legal?
The answer depends on the country, the applicable maritime regulations and whether you’re operating the vessel or simply enjoying time aboard as a passenger.
We explore this question in the video, along with the humorous contrast between our former social life aboard and our new adventures as parents.
Whatever the local regulations, the person responsible for operating a boat should remain fit to navigate safely, particularly when children are aboard.
From Party Boat to Family Sailboat: The Adventure Continues!
One of the greatest things about sailing is that the same boat can accompany us through completely different stages of life.
Yesterday it was about friends, parties and spontaneous sailing trips. Today it’s about babies, life jackets, toys and discovering new ways to enjoy the sea together.
And tomorrow? Who knows!
What matters is that having children doesn’t mean your sailing adventures have to end. Sometimes, the best adventures are simply the ones we never expected.
