Inflatable Sailboats & Portable Boats That Fit in a Backpack

By admin

What if you could fit your boat in a backpack? ⛵🎒

Inflatable boat technology has evolved enormously. Today, you can find inflatable kayaks, SUPs, dinghies, electric-powered watercraft, inflatable sailboats and even inflatable sailing catamarans that can be packed away when you are finished using them.

In Episode 41 of The Low Cost Sailor, we explore the world of inflatable boating and portable sailing and test some of the most interesting options for getting on the water without needing a conventional boat, trailer or permanent marina berth.

The concept is simple: pack it, transport it, inflate it and go sailing.

Watch Episode 41: inflatable boats, portable sailboats, kayaks, SUPs, electric motors, wingfoil gear and even a 4-person inflatable sailing catamaran.

Why Are Inflatable Boats So Interesting?

Traditional boats have one obvious disadvantage: you need somewhere to keep them.

Moorings, marina fees, trailers, winter storage and maintenance can quickly make even a relatively inexpensive boat considerably more expensive.

An inflatable or portable boat approaches the problem differently.

Depending on the model, you may be able to keep it at home, transport it in your car and take it to different cruising grounds without a trailer. Some of the smaller options can even be transported by plane.

This makes inflatable boats especially interesting for sailors who want:

  • A compact yacht tender
  • A portable boat for holidays
  • A boat that can be stored at home
  • A low-cost way to start sailing
  • An additional watercraft for a cruising yacht
  • A boat without permanent marina fees

Inflatable Dinghies: The Classic Portable Boat

Inflatable dinghies have been used as yacht tenders for decades and remain one of the most practical forms of portable boating.

My Quicksilver Tendy 240 Air Deck is a good example. Once deflated, it requires far less storage space than a rigid dinghy while still giving us a practical tender whenever we need one.

Inflatable Kayaks: Much More Than Beach Toys

Modern inflatable kayaks are far more advanced than the simple inflatable boats many people remember from the past.

High-pressure construction and drop-stitch technology can create much stiffer hulls, improving performance, tracking and overall handling.

For cruising sailors, an inflatable kayak can also be a useful way to explore beaches, coves and anchorages without taking up the deck space required by a rigid kayak.

Inflatable SUPs: Probably the Easiest Boat to Transport

Inflatable stand-up paddle boards have helped make high-pressure inflatable construction extremely popular.

A modern inflatable SUP can be rolled into a relatively compact package, stored at home and transported easily in a car.

With the right accessories, a SUP can become surprisingly versatile. Add a sail, wing or electric motor and it starts to become much more than a simple paddle board.

Wingfoil and WingSUP

Portable wings have created new ways of moving across the water without a conventional mast and rig.

Wingfoil and WingSUP sit somewhere between sailing, surfing and foiling, and they are another good example of how portable watersports equipment is changing the way people enjoy the sea.

Electric Motors for Inflatable Boats and SUPs

Small electric propulsion systems are another interesting option for portable boating.

They can provide motorized propulsion without carrying a conventional petrol outboard and fuel.

One of the systems featured in the video is the Scubajet, a compact electric propulsion solution designed for small boats, SUPs and similar watercraft.

Yes, We Also Tried an Inflatable Unicorn 🦄

Because this is The Low Cost Sailor, eventually somebody had to ask the important question:

Can we sail an inflatable unicorn?

There was only one way to find out.

The Inflatable Sailboat: A Real Sailboat You Can Pack Away

This is where the idea of inflatable boating becomes especially interesting for sailors.

The Decathlon Tribord 5S inflatable sailboat featured in the video takes the inflatable concept far beyond a kayak or SUP.

It combines an inflatable hull with a sailing rig to create a genuine portable sailboat that can be deflated for transport and storage.

At around €2,500 at the time referenced in the video, it offered an unusual alternative to a conventional dinghy sailboat: no permanent berth, no large trailer and far less storage space.

A Similar Inflatable Sailboat Available in the US: Tiwal

For sailors in the United States looking for a similar portable sailing concept, another well-known option is Tiwal.

Tiwal produces portable inflatable sailing dinghies, although they are considerably more expensive. The comparison mentioned in our video information is around $6,000.

4-Person Inflatable Sailing Catamaran

And why stop at one hull?

There are also inflatable sailing catamarans that combine inflatable hulls with a sailing rig to create larger portable sailing boats.

One of the most interesting examples featured in the episode is a 4-person inflatable catamaran from Smartkat.

For sailors searching for a portable catamaran that can be dismantled and transported, this type of design offers a very different alternative to a conventional beach catamaran.

Can an Inflatable Sailboat Replace a Traditional Sailboat?

That depends entirely on what you want to do.

An inflatable sailboat is not designed to replace every conventional boat, but that is not really the point.

Its main advantages are transportability, compact storage and lower infrastructure costs.

An inflatable or portable sailboat may make sense if:

  • You do not have space to store a traditional boat
  • You do not want to pay for a permanent marina berth
  • You want a boat that can travel with you
  • You want an additional watercraft aboard your yacht
  • You need a compact tender
  • You want an affordable way to get into sailing

There are compromises, of course. Setup time, performance, durability, capacity and ease of transport vary significantly between models.

But the concept itself is fascinating.

A Sailboat in a Backpack?

We are getting surprisingly close.

Inflatable technology has moved far beyond simple beach toys. Today, there are high-pressure inflatable kayaks, rigid-feeling SUPs, portable electric motors, inflatable dinghies, inflatable sailboats and sailing catamarans.

They will not replace traditional boats for everyone.

But if your biggest obstacles to boat ownership are storage, transport and cost, portable boats deserve a serious look.

And there is something undeniably appealing about arriving at the water with your boat packed away, inflating it…

…and going sailing. ⛵🎒
